My Approach to Therapy
I believe therapy is about more than working through life's difficulties. It's also about discovering what helps us feel connected, find meaning, and experience a greater sense of well-being.
Many people come to therapy feeling overwhelmed, disconnected, or stuck in patterns they don't fully understand. Sometimes life experiences, relationships, anxiety, or past hurts can make it difficult to recognize our own strengths or feel like ourselves.
My approach is rooted in the belief that healing happens through connection — connection with ourselves, with others, with nature, and with the world around us. I draw from attachment theory, Emotionally Focused Therapy, and positive psychology to help clients understand their experiences, work through difficult emotions, and reconnect with what matters most to them.
I have a particular passion for ecotherapy and animal-assisted therapy, and I'm interested in the ways nature and animals can become meaningful parts of the healing process. Whether through traditional talk therapy, incorporating the outdoors into sessions, or exploring the comfort and connection animals can bring, I believe therapy can extend beyond the four walls of an office.
Therapy with me is collaborative, compassionate, and guided by your individual needs. I want you to feel comfortable being yourself, without pressure or judgment. Together, we'll explore what's been difficult, make sense of your experiences, and build on the strengths you already have.
My hope is that therapy helps you not only feel better, but also develop a deeper understanding of yourself, greater resilience, stronger connections, and a life that feels meaningful and fulfilling.
I am a Registered Provisional Psychologist with a Master of Arts in Counselling Psychology from Yorkville University, where I graduated with honours, and a Bachelor of Arts in Applied Psychology from Concordia University of Edmonton. My experience includes working with children, adolescents, and adults navigating anxiety, trauma, relationship difficulties, emotional challenges, and life transitions. My therapeutic approach is grounded in attachment theory, Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT), person-centred care, and positive psychology.
During my undergraduate studies, I worked as a research assistant in Concordia's Nature, Meaning in Life Laboratory, exploring psychological well-being, meaning, and positive psychology interventions. This experience helped shape my passion for understanding how connection with ourselves, others, nature, and animals contributes to our overall well-being.
I have completed Level 1 and Level 2 training in Emotionally Focused Individual Therapy, an EFT externship, and additional professional education through UC Berkeley's Greater Good Science Center in the Science of Happiness and Mindfulness and Resilience to Stress. I continue to pursue professional development in trauma-informed practice, ecotherapy, and animal-assisted approaches, with a particular interest in helping people build resilience, discover their strengths, and create meaningful, fulfilling lives.
Equine-Assisted Therapy
Equine-assisted therapy brings the healing power of horses into the therapeutic process. Sessions take place at Riverfront Equestrian Centre on Monday mornings — a unique opportunity to experience therapy in a natural, grounded setting.
Horses are highly attuned to human emotion and respond authentically to what we bring into the space. Working alongside them can create moments of insight, regulation, and connection that are difficult to access in a traditional office.
Book an Equine SessionSomatic & Body-Based Awareness
Horses mirror our nervous system states, creating real-time opportunities to notice, name, and regulate our emotional responses.
Non-Verbal Connection
For those who find talk therapy challenging, the relational experience with a horse can open pathways to healing that words alone can't reach.
Grounded in Nature
Sessions outdoors at the equestrian centre draw on the restorative qualities of nature, complementing Alissa's ecotherapy approach.
Suitable for a Range of Concerns
Equine sessions can support trauma, anxiety, emotional regulation, relationship patterns, and self-esteem work — for adults, teens, and families.

Being outdoors and spending time with animals has always brought me a sense of peace and grounding. There's something about slowing down, getting outside, and appreciating the little things that helps me feel more connected to myself and the world around me. Whether it's going for a walk, spending time with my dogs, or simply enjoying a quiet moment in nature, I'm reminded that we don't always have to be doing something to find meaning or joy. Sometimes, it's found in the simplest moments.
